Violet Oon – Singapore

Violet Oon is Singapore’s most celebrated food ambassador and a leading authority on the nation’s culinary heritage. With a career spanning over 50 years, she has dedicated her life to documenting, preserving, and elevating the diverse flavors of Singapore—from Peranakan heirloom recipes to colonial-era British-influenced fare, and everything in between.
A former journalist and food critic, Violet began her journey in the 1970s as a food writer for The New Nation newspaper. Her writing stood out not just for its vivid descriptions, but for the way it gave voice to the rich, multicultural tapestry of Singaporean cuisine. Over time, her passion moved from the page to the kitchen. In the 1990s, she opened her first restaurant and began translating her deep knowledge of food into dishes that told stories of heritage, migration, and home.
Today, Violet is the driving force behind the Violet Oon Singapore group of restaurants, known for their elegant interiors and authentic yet refined interpretations of local classics. From rich beef rendang and ayam buah keluak to roti jala with curry and sugee cake, every dish reflects her meticulous attention to detail, respect for tradition, and pride in Singapore’s culinary roots.
Beyond the kitchen, Violet has represented Singapore on the global stage countless times—as a speaker, culinary consultant, and cultural ambassador. Her work has helped shape the way Singaporean food is understood, both locally and internationally. She has been honored with multiple awards for her contributions to the food and hospitality industry, including the Public Service Star and induction into Singapore’s Tourism Hall of Fame.
